why helac?

The rural area of the Afram Plains is being left behind, despite the social and economic progress being made in Ghana today.

Due to poor infrastructure and outdated agricultural practices, the economical situation is declining rapidly. Qualified nurses and doctors have migrated to urban areas, resulting in a  lack of basic healthcare.

At Helac, we believe that change is possible for the community in the Afram Plains, and that change can be achieved by establishing a new mindset in the area. We aim to foster an independent mentality, not merely reliant on charity and imported skills, but equipped with the confidence and expertise to take control of our own future.

We say: let’s solve our problems together as a responsible community, in collaboration with like-minded partners in the rest of the world.

how do we operate?

We believe that real change begins with a mentality of mutual ownership throughout the community. As a result, our initiatives are based on the following principles:

Making people aware of the urgency of change
Educating people by providing the relevant information and evidence to show that better results can be achieved by different methods.

Empowerment of the strong and concerning for the less powerful
Empower strong people within the community, by facilitating their personal goals and utilise them as ambassadors to encourage and mentor the community.

Facilitating ownership
Creating sustainable projects in which people can practise their professional skills to become self-providing entrepreneurs.

Providing expertise and collaboration
Providing people with contemporary professional skills (like communication and IT) to make them valuable partners, within and outside their community.

Every project incorporates these basic principles and will be made SMART to ensure effective and sustainable results.
