add value project

The traditional ways of farming in the Afram Plains don’t apply to modern demands for efficient, sustainable agricultural practices.

  • Harvest is heavily influenced by weather-conditions and depletion of farmland, causing high post-harvest lost.

  • The use of strong pesticides is a great risk for the health of the population and the environment.

  • Lacking modern marketing knowledge, farmers are not able to get suitable prices for their non-processed food.

Agricultural Co-operatives
By starting co-operatives, in which all employees have a share of ownership, Helac creates communities that have mutual interest in the agricultural development of the region. This scheme would place an emphasis on eco-friendly and sustainable production, processing methods and the creation of new distribution channels.

The Add Value Project puts agricultural practice in Afram Plains on a contemporary, competitive and eco-friendly level.

e-education centre

In most of the rural areas of Ghana, there’s lack of IT equipment and internet access. Primary and secondary schools aren’t able to provide their pupils and teachers with the necessary modern IT-skills. In addition, for most of the population, vocational education is unaffordable, causing a great distance to the job market for generations of young and potential people.

The E-education Centre makes quality information and education reachable for the people of the Afram Plains.

IT and vocational skills

Situated in Donkorkrom, the E-education Centre provides easy accessible educational information for different target groups in the region. The centre is equipped with desktops and laptops and provides shared mobile devices for people in the most remote parts of the district.

Creating digital learning programs containing audio visual tutorials, the centre delivers contemporary educational information for teachers and pupils (IT-skills), farmers (eco-friendly farming) and young adults wanting to improve their vocational skills in a variety of professions.

Working together with educational partners from within and outside Ghana, students will receive free, up-to-date knowledge and skills and become well-trained, highly-qualified professionals, enabling them to create their own future.

health education project

Rural areas of Ghana suffer from a lack of qualified nurses and doctors. Graduated healthcare students migrate to practise their skills in urban areas, leaving a very high demand for basic healthcare.

The Health Education Project will help to bridge this gap, by starting a nursing training college in Donkorkrom, next to the district hospital.

Working together with educational partners from within and outside Ghana, students will receive up-to-date knowledge and skills and become well-trained, highly-qualified professionals.

Acceptable fees and high quality education, will attract students from all over the region, not having to find settlement in the expensive outskirts of the major cities.

Helac-scholarship

The school’s revenues will be used fund a scholarship for talented young people. The scholarship comes under the condition that after graduation, they will practice their profession for at least five years in the Afram Plains. A small percentage of their income will also be donated to the scholarship project.

The Health Education Project ensures sufficient basic healthcare for the rural communities of Afram Plains.
